| Description: |
Gram-negative, microaerophilic, flagellate, spiral bacterium, Campylobacter species are the leading cause of food-borne gastroenteritis in developed countries. Infection with C. jejuni is the most frequent antecedent to a form of neuromuscular paralysis known as Guillain-Barre syndrome. Like C. concisus, this Campylobacter species has been historically associated with periodontal disease, but has been recently isolated from human patients with gastroenteritis. This strain was isolated in South Africa from the feces of a patient with diarrhea. |
