Official Name
Lignin peroxidase.
Alternative Name(s)
Diarylpropane oxygenase.
Diarylpropane peroxidase.
Ligninase I.
LiP.
Reaction catalysed
1,2-bis(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)propane-1,3-diol + H(2)O(2) <=> 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde + 1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)ethane-1,2-diol + H(2)O
Cofactor(s)
Heme.
Comment(s)
  • Brings about the oxidative cleavage of C-C and ether (C-O-C) bonds in a number of lignin model compounds (of the diarylpropane and arylpropane-aryl ether type).
  • Also oxidizes benzyl alcohols to aldehydes, via an aromatic cation radical.
  • Involved in the oxidative breakdown of lignin in white rot basidiomycetes.
  • Molecular oxygen may be involved in the reaction of some isoenzymes under aerobic conditions.
