SWISS-2DPAGE is an annotated two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D PAGE) and SDS-PAGE database established in 1993 and maintained collaboratively by the Biomedical Proteomics Reasearch Group (BPRG) of the Geneva University and the Proteome Informatics Group of the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB).
SWISS-2DPAGE was the first 2-D PAGE database accessible on the Web. It is a curated, added-value database, containing experimental data from 2-D PAGE, as well as data obtained by manual annotation and computational work.
Increased data flow and especially the automation of proteome analysis have created a requirement for resources, which cannot be addressed in full by public funding. In 1998, it has therefore been decided to ask non-academic users to financially contribute to the maintenance of the database. This will be achieved in the following manner:
Starting in September 1998, a system of an annual subscription fee for commercial use of the database has been implemented. SIB has mandated Geneva Bioinformatics (GeneBio) to act as its representative for the purpose of concluding the necessary license agreements and levying the fees.
